Buyer's Tips: What to look for when buying the best microphones for acoustic guitar

  • Self noise (the ambient signal generated just by the microphone) should be as low as possible, under 18db is the absolute minimum requirement, and less than 10 is ideal
  • Cardioid pattern microphones are best for recording just a single guitar, which can be useful for live situations and studio. For two guitars, a Figure-8 is the best way to go without also capturing the noise of the room or venue
  • If you’ll be using one microphone to record multiple tracks one after another, a large diaphragm design is best for the versatility. On the other hand, if it’s just for acoustic guitars, especially smaller body types, then a small diaphragm design is ideal due to the better high frequency response
  • Finding a microphone that includes a shock mount is great if you’ll be in a live gigging situation where you need to minimize the disturbances of whatever else is going on in a room, such as people moving through a room or dancing close to a stage

Ok let's look at each product in more detail. To make things easier for you, we've added pros and cons for each one, as well as a video demonstration so you can see them in action. So without further ado, let’s take a look...

A cardioid condenser mic that’s been praised as one of the best microphones for acoustic guitar, but also for just about any acoustic recording needs.

  • Small, lightweight design makes it easy to position
  • Able to handle high sound pressure, up to 146dB
  • 3 settings for getting the best out of your bass frequencies
  • Very transparent due to the flat response curve
  • The microphones are not produced in pairs so there may be minor differences when used as an array for studio recording
  • Top end response is slightly reduced by the windscreen plate - removing it can be useful for improving the tone of your recorded track but also makes the microphone mor vulnerable to damage and air pops
  • No option to select other polar patterns than cardioid
